My biggest gripe is probably how while Tapu Koko's battle had the required gravitas, the battle itself wasn't really much to write home about compared to other battles against legendaries in past seasons, even before XY, in spite of some cool moments. What irked me a bit was Ash's behavior around Sophocles, while I can buy him getting bored of the science talk given Clemont never went particularly in-depth in his explanation I do feel the episode turned Ash's immaturity up just a bit too much even for SM Ash considering he should know better than touch random things, and while Sophocles' homemade lab is pretty impressive he just finished travelling with a friend that owned and managed the Pokémon equivalent of the Eiffel Tower and created a sentient robot, so the way he reacted felt a bit odd considering this: that said, I am aware that by now each season basically acts like past ones never happened unless they specifically say otherwise, and it is in Ash's character to be easily excited, so it's really a small gripe overall and one that subs might actually lessen compared to the RAW episode, and the fact they started developing Sophocles and differentiating him from Clemont (even if just slightly) more than makes up for it. Overall I think the episode handled its plot well enough (even if the battle at the beginning felt way too much like an excuse to have Abareru-kun have a voice cameo), but I did like how we saw Sophocles' family and his house, and how in general they focused like I hoped on his being an Electric-type specialist over him being an inventor, with the giant hamster wheel being more of a means to an end than the solution (alongside exploding due to Ash and Pikachu overloading it rather than a Clemont-like spontaneous malfunction), and the battle at the end was pretty tense and gave off the idea of Ash and Pikachu fighting a deity (though, more on that later), and I'm very interested about what's going on with Ash's Z-Ring, especially given Gigavolt Havoc was definitely stronger than it was in episode 2 given how it managed to toss aside Tapu Koko, and why he keeps being so interested in him. It was also nice seeing Pikachu being able to land some hits this time and having Tapu Koko retaliate with moves that match his in-game moveset (Pretty sure his other 2 moves are Agility and Electro Ball) Even if it was a bit short the battle was still really good if it is this good in only episode 19 I can't imagine how their battle would be in the last season of the Gen 7 anime.Īlso, Ash is back at it again, jumping off of dangerous heights to save Pikachu, loved how it both served as a nod to XY episode 2 and Tapu Koko saving Moon and Nebby.Ī very nice episode all things considered, though a couple of things of it irked me more than I wished they would, one of which is admittedly fault of how the Anime is structured and one which isn't. I do hope he'll eventually learn it, Pikachu with the hat was definitely foreshadowing (Probably by the time of their 3rd battle) Seeing Ash's Electrium Z glowing after they blew up the wheel and seeing Pikachu with Ash's hat made me think Pikachu learned 10.000.000 Volts and I got really hyped, so I was a bit disappointed when they just used a regular Gigavolt Havoc but seeing how it actually managed to damage Tapu Koko this time quickly made up for it. So it is Ability is confirmed to be Electric Surge.ĮDIT2: Kukui confirms that Tapu Koko can use Nature's Madness and Discharge. Litten knows Fire Fang and will battle Pikachu in SM021.ĮDIT: Sophocles states that Tapu Koko's Electric Terrain comes from its Ability, Electric Surge. Tapu Lele and Cutiefly make their debuts in SM020. The next episode previews are also very interesting. We also get to see Tapu Koko battle more, which is always nice. This is a far cry from what we got for most of the other protagonists (where they looked absolutely little like their parents, except for Brock ). Sophocles resembles both of his parents so much, as does Kiawe. Mallow's father has the same skin tone and hair color as his daughter. This anime is really trying to make the parents actually look like their kids. We also get to see Sophocles' parents in the anime, and I have to say. The COTD's Mudbray used Double Kick, and that's it. I still think Tackle is that move, as we apparently saw Rockruff tackle Magmar in SM015. Rockruff gets its first official win under Ash and it is confirmed to have a Normal-type move (since it used Breakneck Blitz).
